Curry Mile
The Curry Mile is the stretch of Wilmslow Road in Rusholme, south of Manchester city centre, lined with South Asian and Middle Eastern restaurants, sweet shops and late-night takeaways. It grew from the 1960s onwards with the South Asian communities who settled in the area.
In practice
The street runs through the busy corridor between the city centre and the universities and Fallowfield, so it is full of students as well as families. Over recent decades many of the original curry houses have been joined or replaced by shisha cafés, Middle Eastern grills and dessert parlours, and the neon signs make it one of the most recognisable streets in the city at night. Many restaurants do not serve alcohol; some allow you to bring your own, so ask first.
Why it matters to newcomers
The Curry Mile is one of Manchester's classic first nights out and a good, cheap place to eat with colleagues. Buses run along Wilmslow Road day and night. For quieter evenings, the side streets of Rusholme and nearby Levenshulme have well-regarded restaurants away from the main strip.
