Corrie
Corrie is the nickname for Coronation Street, ITV's soap opera set in the fictional Weatherfield, a district based on Salford, and broadcast since 1960. It is the world's longest-running television soap opera still on air.
In practice
The programme follows the residents of a street of terraced houses, a corner shop, a factory and the Rovers Return pub, and has been watched by generations of British viewers. It has been filmed in Manchester since the start; the outdoor set is now at ITV's studios at Trafford Wharf, beside MediaCityUK. Many British people's first image of Manchester and Salford - terraced streets, back alleys, sharp-tongued neighbours - comes from Corrie.
Why it matters to newcomers
Corrie is part of everyday conversation in the north-west: storylines come up at work, actors appear at local events, and the show has employed thousands of people in the region's TV industry. You do not need to watch it, but knowing that Weatherfield is fictional and the Rovers Return is a pub will save some confusion.
