MediaCityUK
MediaCityUK is the media and digital business district at Salford Quays, home to large parts of the BBC and to ITV's northern studios, two miles west of Manchester city centre. It sits on the old Manchester docks, which were in Salford and Trafford, so strictly it is not in the City of Manchester at all.
In practice
The BBC moved several departments here from London in 2011, including BBC Breakfast, BBC Sport and children's channels, and ITV's studios and the Coronation Street set are across the water at Trafford Wharf. Around them are offices of production companies and digital businesses, the University of Salford's media campus, the Lowry arts centre and the Imperial War Museum North. A Metrolink line runs to the site.
Why it matters to newcomers
If you work in broadcasting, production or digital media in the north, you are likely to work at or with MediaCityUK. Saying it is "in Manchester" is common, but people in Salford will correct you. Waterside flats around the Quays are popular with people working there.
